Housing one of the widest-ranging orchid collections in the world, the National Orchid Garden is found in the heart of Singapore Botanic Gardens. Orchid hybridisation is a speciality of the garden, which is at the forefront of the study and preservation of the flowers globally. Since opening in 1995, it has accumulated over 1,000 different species of orchid and 2,000 hybrids, among a collection that totals over 60,000 individual plants.
The orchids take many different forms, come in a range of sizes, and their ability to adjust to the demands of their environment is often breathtaking. The National Orchid Garden is divided into four different zones by colour, with the spectrum of blues and whites in the winter area, with red and pink varieties arranged in the summer zone. The forms of the flowers are celebrated in often ornate names, such as 'Lady's Slipper' (paphiopedilum), which resembles a ballet shoe. Petite oncidum is known as 'Dancing Ladies'.
There is a fantastic amount to learn here, and the Visitor Centre will cater to all of your educational needs. Take a workshop, or follow a 90-minute walking tour for more insight into the hybridisation process: how plants pollinate and the plant’s adaptation process to environmental change are among a range of fascinating information.
Due to the need to preserve the orchids in a climate similar to their natural environment, this is a steamy place. Bring water with you for your visit, or get some refreshments at the kiosk. The gift shop allows you to bring home some further reading and other souvenirs.
The National Orchid Garden is found in the Singapore Botanic Gardens in the middle of the city. It is accessible by bus or on foot. Pay parking is available for the gardens, or there is public parking on Tyersall Avenue. A short walk after arrival in the gardens will bring you to the Orchid Garden. Closed on public holidays, the entry price is moderate.
