Soak up the great atmosphere and explore the beautiful gardens and historic architecture at this early Victorian mansion.

As home to some of Britain’s finest gardens and one of the most beautiful estates in the north of England, Arley Hall is actually a much-loved family estate. A wonderful place to relax and unwind, the estate contains a grand mansion, landscaped gardens and a vast park containing a forest, nursery and chapel.

Built in the Elizabethan style but during the Victorian period, Arley Hall is a fabulous collection of ornate ceilings and grand staircases, original oak panelling and impressive fireplaces. Don’t miss the beautiful stained glass windows. The estate has been owned by the same family for over 550 years.

One of the estate’s biggest draws are the beautiful landscaped gardens that have been part of the estate for 250 years. Look out for the double herbaceous borders, thought to be the very first in Britain.

It’s worth taking your time at Arley Hall, as the gardens cover 3.2 hectares and it can take several hours to appreciate everything properly. If you’re interested in learning more about horticulture, have a chat with the owners Lord and Lady Ashbrook, who are often around and willing answer any questions you may have.

After all that walking, you can refuel with a drink or delicious homemade meal at the Tudor barn that dates back to the 16th century. If the weather is nice, grab a seat in the peaceful outdoor dining area. The estate also offers the chance to try your hand at archery or clay-pigeon shooting, although you need to organise these activities in advance. Throughout the year, the estate hosts different cultural and artistic events, including garden festivals, outdoor concerts, theatre performances and photography workshops.

Arley Hall and Gardens is located 32 kilometres southwest of Manchester and is best reached by car. The estate is not open during the winter months. Check to see if the hall is open during your visit, as sometimes just the gardens are open to the public. Take a look at the estate’s website for more details concerning events, opening hours and prices.
