Watch steam rise from Hokkaido’s tallest peak, follow trails past pretty alpine vegetation, admire the scenery at mirrored lakes and ski on miles of backcountry terrain.

Flourishing with wildflowers in summer and a haven for skiers in winter, Asahidake is a popular year-round destination for outdoor pursuits. Reaching a height of 7,510 feet (2,290 meters), this active stratovolcano dominates Daisetsuzan National Park and is the tallest peak on Hokkaido. Asahidake last erupted in 1739. Today it is considered a safe environment for tourist activities.

Ride the Asahidake Ropeway high above forested hillsides to Sugatami Station. From here, a 1-hour walking trail takes you to lakes and viewpoints. The scenery changes dramatically according to the season. Marvel at brightly colored alpine flowers in spring and summer, appreciate the fall foliage and tramp through thick snow in winter. Stop at the ponds and lakes to see hills reflected perfectly in the placid water.

Add more adventure to your visit by continuing to walk for 2 to 3 hours to the mountain’s summit. Appreciate the gorgeous panoramic views of Daisetsuzan National Park, which the Ainu people call Kamuimintara (Playground of the Gods). See steam blowing from volcanic vents, smell the sulfur and spot sun pillars. After your hike, visit the Asahidake Hot Springs, a great place to soothe aching muscles.

Snow falls heavily on the mountain from mid-December until late March. Bring your skis, snowboard or snowshoes to enjoy the wild backcountry terrain. Facilities are limited on the mountain so it may be just you and the snow of an exhilarating off-piste playground. Rent equipment, if needed, at the onsen village located at the base of the ropeway.

The mountain is just a 1-hour drive from Asahikawa. Drivers can park in the lot at the ropeway’s base station. Alternatively, use the bus service from Asahikawa Station to the village.

Asahidake is open year-round and a fee is applicable to ride Asahidake Ropeway. Information about the mountain and activities is available at Asahidake Visitor Center. Find campgrounds, hotels and guesthouses to suit various budgets in the onsen village.
