Discover the story of one of the world’s most famous composers at this interactive musical museum that has state-of-the-art facilities.

The Bachhaus, or Bach House, offers a wonderful insight into the life and historical context surrounding one of Eisenach’s most famous sons. Come here to learn all about Johann Sebastian Bach, to attend a concert or event, or simply to marvel at how well-presented this museum is. It is the biggest museum dedicated to Bach anywhere in the world, as well as being one of Germany’s largest musical museums.

Bach was born in Eisenach in 1685 and spent the first 10 years of his life here. He belonged to a musical family, so perhaps it is no surprise that he went on to achieve musical greatness. Today, his name is known all over the world, even among people who have little interest in classical music.

Get a sense of what life was like in the Eisenach of Bach’s childhood by visiting the section of the museum set in a historic house. The interior of this part of the museum is set up like a home from the period. See authentic furniture from the time alongside personal items that once belonged to Bach himself.

Head next door to the modern wing of the museum to discover state-of-the-art exhibits including a vast 180-degree projection of a Bach performance. Or, if you prefer just to listen rather than watch, get comfy in one of the bubble chairs suspended from the ceiling. These are perfectly set up for relaxing as you hear Bach’s music through headphones. Wander through galleries filled with beautiful antique and contemporary musical instruments. And be sure not to miss one of the most special things this museum has to offer. Every hour, a mini-concert is held in the instrument room, treating visitors to an intimate live performance.

The Bachhaus is open every day. Allow yourself around an hour to see everything it holds, and make sure you time your visit to coincide with one of the concerts. Although there is an entrance fee, discounts are available for families, students, children and groups. To get an even fuller picture of Bach’s fascinating life, you can also book a guided tour in advance.
