Uniting the two coasts of Mexico across the Devil’s Backbone, the world’s third-highest cable-stayed bridge provides spectacular views of the mountains and valley.

Baluarte Bridge is an extraordinary cable-stayed structure that stretches across a valley between the states of Durango and Sinaloa. Its road is a dizzying 1,322 feet (403 meters) above the valley floor, making it one of the top 10 highest bridges of any kind in the world. Brave yourself for the vertigo-inducing setting before crossing the bridge with your vehicle.

The bridge is 66 feet (20 meters) wide and consists of four lanes. Its 12 piers rising from the valley floor keep it steady. Gaze up at the two central pylons that rise with many steel cables that keep the bridge in place high in the air.

Enjoy the views of the surrounding magnificent mountainous terrain, the Sierra Madre Occidental. Brilliant green vegetation spreads across the rocks and follows the meandering path of the Baluarte River below.

You can also stop nearby for views of the bridge from across the valley. Snap photos of the impressive structure and go mountain biking on the undulating terrain. Bring food and drink to have a picnic on a rock and enjoy the complete serenity in this remote area.

Baluarte Bicentennial Bridge is the official name of the structure. The bridge, which was built in 2008 and inaugurated in 2012, runs a distance of 3,688 feet (1,124 meters). Learn how it has played a key role in use of the highway, reducing the traveling time between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Mexico. About 2,000 vehicles per day cross it.

From the center of the city of Concordia, drive northeast for 38 miles (61 kilometers) to get to Baluarte Bridge in a little more than 1 hour. While in this region, consider visiting other nearby landmarks, including the Iglesia Copala and the Túnel Pánuco.
