Admire the stunning mosaics that adorn the ceiling of this octagonal baptistery to appreciate why it appears on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

At the centre of Ravenna stands the Baptistry of Neon, a fascinating piece of architecture with an even more intriguing history. The octagonal structure dates back to the 5th century and is home to a collection of breathtaking Byzantine mosaics. Most of these are centred upon its grand dome. Admire the centuries-old mosaics as you explore the UNESCO site and discover the stories behind its creators.

Starting its life as a Roman bathhouse around A.D. 400, the Baptistry of Neon was later converted and attached to Ravenna’s orthodox cathedral. While the cathedral no longer stands, the baptistery has remained an important religious and cultural site for centuries. See the baptistery from outside to appreciate its curious street-level appearance. While it appears that the structure has sunk, it is actually the streets that have risen nearly 10 feet (3 metres) since its construction.

Enter the octagonal building to see its stunning interior. Gaze upward toward the famous centre of tiled dome with its depiction of the Baptism of Christ. The enormous mosaic piece expands outward in rings, with the main inner ring showing the Twelve Apostles. Look for the eight sections of the outer ring, which feature a series of empty thrones and gardens. Photograph the rich colours used in the mosaic, which range from deep blues to shimmering gold.

Continue exploring the baptistery to admire its other features, including gold arches, a series of stucco reliefs depicting biblical characters and marble designs set into the walls. Stop at the Byzantine altar to see the octagonal font, said to date back to the 12th century.

The Baptistry of Neon is located on the Piazza del Duomo in central Ravenna. Reach the area easily on foot from all central locations. Buses stop at the Piazza del Duomo regularly. The baptistery is open daily except for Christmas and New Year’s. Pay the admission fee to gain entry to other religious sites in Ravenna as well.
