Accidents don't just happen; they're caused
My recent visit to Chesterfield and other places in England took months of planning. Upon arrival I was told that there was no heating or hot water due to a boiler malfunction all guests had to be re-located. First I was sent to the Ibis down the street. Then the staff there told me there were no rooms so I had to stay at the Ibis in Bolsover. Trouble is, I did not have a car (travelling by train) so I had to pay a taxi to get there. Furthermore, I'd planned to stay in the heart of Chesterfield, not out in a suburb. Perhaps, and this is only speculation, had more care been taken in the maintenance of the hotel's boiler, I and all the other guests would've been spared this inconvenience. If asked, I will never recommend this hotel.

Excellent Service/Great Location
Although our room needed some TLC plus a renovation, we were very comfortable. The staff all went that entra mile and the location was fantastic, just a short stroll to the centre of town. Having left Chesterfield to live in Australia 45 years ago, I would definitely recommend the hotel, and would stay there again.

A lovely hotel, great value for the price. The staff are true professionals in the hospitality business, truly lovely people they make up for anything that the hotel may lack. Would definitely stay again. ' .

Great location
The hotel is comfortable enough and offers free pass to the leisure facilities and gym but could do with some serious upgrading.

Nice Victorian hotel value for money
Stayed quite a few times comfortable clean, old hotel but that adds to the character and makes the stay more memorable than the more formal modern hotels, for me anyway

Good hotel within walking distance of town centre.
The staff were very helpful and changed the room when they realised that we needed a walk in shower. Our only problem was the lift not working,we are both disabled.

A bit tired
I stayed in this hotel about 20 years ago when I first moved to chesterfield. Overall it looks a bit tired but clean. The tape on the carpet up the stairs and our mattress was so lumpy I had a bad back in the morning. I did mention it to them in the morning and they would pass it onto maintance so they were very friendly. Just needed a good nights sleep.

A good comfortable central hotel 2 minutes from the station and 10 minutes from the shopping centre and historic market days with a pool /gym/parking at a reasonable price.

Great traditional hotel.
Very enjoyable stay. Rooms clean & tidy but would benefit from a refit. Staff were excellent especially the guy who gave us a tour of the amazing ballroom etc. The history of the place is fab & the file on it (ask at reception) is a great read. Pool is most pleasant too. Thanks.

noisy
Surrounded by roads and next to the railway station so unavoidably noisy but very close to the town centre, winding wheel, pomegranate theatre and crooked spire. Stair carpets need replacing not taping up. Did not try the good as breakfast was to expensive and there is a fantastic Chinese restaurant ( Rising Sun)100 yards up the road.

never ever again
words cant describe how bad this was. receptionist not helpful. told us our room on 1st floor, very old tiny lift said it was on 2nd, it actually was on floor between 1&2 so always had to use some stairs. corridors dirty, creaky floors, carpets gaffer taped down BAD paint job. room had clean bed linen. tv left from 70's small old set that had only 4 channels so no use. bath had in a former life been a jacuzzi bath but so old inlet hole covered with pollyfiller, very yellow and stained, dirty, mouldy and hair in it, needless to say we didnt use it. toilet seat stained yellow, bathroom very old worn dirty and badly painted. beds very poor with springs coming through, window only opens 1" but wont close so very noisy due to 2 main rd's. went in to dinner as restaurant looked ok but ALL the chairs have lost their springs so you sit on a bar of wood, very bad. food ok waitress lovely. we intended to use pool (thats why we booked this hotel instead of the ibis far superior hotel but no pool) but were so disheartened we didnt use it. to cap it all as i was undressed in bathroom at 9am and my daughter was getting dressed the cleaner opened our door (which i had locked) and came in. i was so upset. we didnt want to wait for breakfast even though our checkout wasnt till 11am we quickly got dressed and left, down all the stairs as the lift now broken. it may sound cheap dont be fooled its awful, dirty and horribly run. book the ibis over the road. you were warned.

great breakfast
cooked breakfast was well worth the extra £4.95. room had all you needed, but was stuck in the 1970's,needed bringing upto date. the bedding was crisp and clean, and towels were clean and fluffy, but the carpet could have done with a good clean as there were a lot of staines on it.The reception, restaurant and bar very nice and staff very helpfull ,location was good as it is close to centre and train station.

Comfortable, but a bit tired.
I visited for a conference and dinner. The facilities for the conference were good. The room was a bit disappointing. Comfortable, and properly equipped, but in need of refurbishment. No problems with cleanliness. The evening meal was enjoyed by my colleagues, but I thought it unimaginative and not well presented for a hotel of this rating. I didn't use the pool, or other leisure facilities, but they appeared to be good.

Friendly reception, nice dinner
A little noisy (it was a Saturday night and the floorboards on our floor (2nd floor/) were creaky). And the loo makes quite a noise when it flushes! But there was a warm welcome at the desk, and dinner was of a good quality (my duck confit was delicious, washed down with a Chilean sauvignon blanc). I would definitely stay there again as it's handy for relatives in the area, and a good price. Much more fun than the Ibis across the way!

Bedrooms in terrible condition
Wallpaper peeling off the walls, paint peeling off the ceiling, awful smell of damp in the bathroom, net curtains stained with dirt, curtains fraying, carpet stained and threadbare, wallpaper above bed stained, bedside cabinets stained with watermarks and walls, paintwork everywhere stained with scuffmarks. It was a tiny room that also had loud traffic noise from the dual carriageway. An absolutely vile room that shouldn't be allowed to be sold as accommodation. We were moved into a better maintained room, however this one too has stained carpets and furniture and still needs. It was clean (where possible) the bed comfortable and the shower excellent. Having read responses to some reviews, I understand that it may be a big ask to upgrade the rooms within a budget, but guests should be made aware at the time of booking whether they are allocated a refurbished or non-refurbished room. Arriving at a hotel to be greeted with room 204 is not a pleasant experience and certainly took the shine off our much anticipated break. Reception area, bar and restaurant have obviously had a refurb fairly recently and was decent. However as you go up the stairs, Gaffa tape holds the stair carpet down and a massive ceiling waterstain greets you and things just seem to get worse from there. Staff were all very pleasant, friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our evening meal in the restaurant, however this was by far the worst accommodation I have encountered.

Staff good; bathroom horrendous!
Nice bar, restaurant & great staff - helpful & friendly. Bedroom ok, but bathroom awful. Big gap between bath & wall due to absence of sealant. Bath looked like it was covered in blobs of sludge, but on closer inspection...noticed that it was black marks caused by loss of its enamel. Booked a 3 night stay, but left early!
