A rooftop Ferris wheel, an indoor tree house and a life-size, walk-through model of a whale just some of the exhibits in this one-of-a-kind children's museum.

The City Museum is an eclectic collection of bizarre artifacts, unique play areas, aquariums and much more. A favourite with locals and visitors, exhibits like The World's Largest Underpants will tickle the funny bone of children and adults alike.

The museum is housed in what was formerly the International Shoe Company, purchased by artist Bob Cassilly in 1983. Cassilly spent years renovating the building and filling 54,500 square metres with repurposed architectural and industrial objects in order to create a unique interactive museum aimed at children and teenagers.

MonstroCity, an enormous climbing frame made from reclaimed materials, sits in front of the main entrance, and is a must for all adventurous kids. Once inside, head to the first floor and explore tree houses, a network of underground caves or the belly of a huge whale. Get a look at some local aquatic life in the 19,000-litre fish tank.

An even larger aquarium is located on the second floor, and is home to iconic aquatic creatures such as sea snakes, alligators, stingrays and turtles. Delve into the world of one of the ocean's most ferocious predators as you pass through the glass tunnel under the shark tank. Then head to the fascinating shoelace factory (where they replicate the process used in the 1800s) and get yourself a custom-made pair of laces. Before you leave the second floor, don't forget to check out the collection of vintage opera posters.

The third floor is home to a compact Natural History museum and the ever-popular Beatnik Bob's exhibit, where you'll find a wonderful collection of vintage pinball machines, among other 1950s treasures. The circus show is held just opposite Beatnik Bob's, and delights visitors daily with its daring displays of acrobatics.

On summer days you can access the rooftop and explore the playground, splash pool and old-fashioned Ferris wheel. To get down to ground level, just take the slide from the third floor!

City Museum is located in downtown St. Louis and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check the website for seasonal opening hours and for information about the circus show timetable. Public transportation is your best travel option, as there isn't much parking - and don't forget to wear some sturdy, closed-toe, closed-heel shoes.
