Coastal Trail

Walk through some of the most beautiful scenery in San Francisco along Lands End’s oceanfront trail from where you can see iconic sights such as the Golden Gate Bridge.

Experience San Francisco at its most scenic on the Coastal Trail in the iconic Lands End parkland. Both visitors and locals run and stroll along the trail to appreciate the scenery and enjoy the great outdoors.

Many people call the Coastal Trail the “Main Street” of Lands End, and with good reason. Discover innumerable attractions and sights along its 3-mile (5-kilometer) length. Enter the trail at the ruins of the Sutro Baths near Ocean Beach. Alternatively, walk the trail in reverse and begin at the Lincoln Park Golf Course.

Take a detour down to China Beach. The secluded sandy cove is one of San Francisco’s hidden gems. Enjoy a picnic, wade in the surf or search for shells along the beach. See if you can beat the maze at Eagle Point Labyrinth and enjoy the views at Point Lobos, the park’s westernmost promontory.

The views along the Coastal Trail are tremendous. See the scarlet Golden Gate Bridge shimmering in the sun to the north. Frequently it may be peeking through the fog. Look out toward the seemingly endless Pacific Ocean and see the rugged Marin Headlands across the bay. Watch for the plants and animals around you. Cypress and eucalyptus trees provide shade, while chickadees, sparrows and other birds warble from their branches.

Learn more about the area and its history at the Lands End Lookout. Set off from the trail a bit, the modern facility offers educational exhibits, a small gift shop and even a café.

The trail is not too strenuous, suitable for the entire family. Walkers, runners and bikers use the trail, so be conscious of others along the route.

Park your car in one of the several lots at either end of the Coastal Trail. Consider taking public transportation to reach the trailhead. Muni bus lines run along nearby Geary Boulevard. Take advantage of the restroom and drinking water facilities at the Lands End Lookout.
