Commodore Theatre Tours and Activities

Commodore Theatre

See the latest blockbuster in art deco style at this historic movie theater, complete with state-of-the-art digital projection equipment and a full dining menu.

Watch first-run movies at the iconic Commodore Theatre in Portsmouth, listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. Built as the flagship of William S. “Bunkie” Wilder’s chain of local movie theaters, the theater operated from 1945 until 1975, before closing for 12 years. A local native then restored and revitalized the theater, which today features a 41-foot (12-meter) screen and the latest in film and sound technology.

Choose a viewing spot from 190 seats on the dining floor and 318 in the balcony. In both the auditorium and the lobby, notice the painstakingly reworked artwork, including huge murals recreated with their original scenes. Look up to see the 300-pound (140-kilogram) chandeliers of Italian leaded crystal. From the marble bases on the table lamps to the new wall coverings and furnishings, the theater brings an elegant ambiance to the regular movie-going experience.

Dine at your seat in the auditorium, where you can simply use the phone on your table to place your order directly with the kitchen staff. Choose from a full menu of pizza, sandwiches, salads, desserts and beverages.

Purchase your ticket in person at the box office on the same day as your show. Phone reservations are not accepted. To increase your chances of getting a table on the dining floor, consider attending a Monday or Tuesday evening performance or a matinee show on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday. Balcony seating is generally available on weekend evenings. Visit the box office starting from early afternoon on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays or early evening on any show day.

The Commodore Theatre is just west of the Elizabeth River in the center of Portsmouth. Park for free on the street in historic Olde Towne Portsmouth any evening or any time on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. There are also several pay parking lots within walking distance of the theater. If you drive a Tesla to the theater, charge it for free while you’re enjoying dinner and a movie.
