Czech National Museum Tours and Activities

Czech National Museum featuring street scenes, a city and outdoor art

Discover Czech ethnographical and musical history, art exhibits and African and Asian culture at this series of museums spread across Prague’s city centre.

The Czech National Museum (Národní Muzeum) is a collection of museums that showcase the varied aspects of Czech and international culture. See art exhibits and learn about the nation’s revered composers. Explore the traditions of Czech folkloric communities and indigenous groups from around the world. Marvel at the architecture of the Czech National Museum’s buildings, many of which are attractions in themselves.

The main branch of the Czech National Museum presides over Wenceslas Square in Prague’s New Town district. It’s closed for refurbishments until 2018 but worth seeing from the outside to appreciate its neo-Renaissance style, designed by Josef Schulz in the late 1800s. Adjacent to the building is the National Museum New Building, where you will find a taxidermy display of animals associated with Noah’s Ark, in addition to temporary exhibits.

At the nearby Antonín Dvořák Museum, relive the life journey of one of the Czech Republic’s most celebrated composers. See displays of his personal possessions, including furniture, a piano and a viola.

Experience the legends and lifestyles of ancient Asian, African, Indonesian and Oceanic cultures at the Náprstek Museum. Discover the life and work of Bedřich Smetana, another revered national composer, at the Bedřich Smetana Museum. Set on the waterfront of the Old Town, this museum offers wonderful views of Charles Bridge and the Vltava River.

Across the river in the Malá Strana district is the Czech Museum of Music, in a 17th-century monastery. Spot fantastic collections of guitars, keyboards, lutes and violins, among other instruments. See an exposition of neo-classical paintings and a study of 20th-century popular music. Don’t miss the Ethnographical Museum, which celebrates Czech rural life and the folkloric history of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.

Reach any of the branches of the Czech National Museum easily by public bus, tram or the metro. Plan your visit according to the museums located in the same districts. If you are feeling energetic it’s possible to walk between the sites.

Visit the Czech National Museum’s official website for information about opening times and admission fees. Here, you’ll also find details about associated sites located outside of Prague’s city center.
