Explore lavish 18th-century State Rooms, see stunning planetary-themed murals and wander in the beautifully landscaped gardens of this Baroque palace.

Schloss Eggenberg is a magnificent historic palace and one of the most impressive Baroque monuments in the Austrian state of Styria. Visit Schloss Eggenberg to see its 18th-century State Rooms, museum collections and beautifully landscaped gardens.

The Eggenberg estate was first established in the mid-15th century. Today, Schloss Eggenberg is a grand 17th-century palace complex with Gothic and Baroque architecture. The current complex was acquired by Austria’s oldest museum, the Joanneum, shortly before World War II.

Begin your visit by exploring the palace’s elaborate State Rooms, which have barely changed since the 18th century. Discover the stunning 24-room “piano nobile,” filled with immaculately preserved 17th- and 18th-century designs, furnishings, tapestries and adornments. Gaze up to see stunning ceiling paintings and explore the palace’s East Asian-inspired Rococo rooms.

Find the Planetary Room, an early-Baroque treasure featuring paintings by a 17th-century court artist combining astrological symbolism with Eggenberg family mythology. Discover the palace’s ornate church, Maria Schnee (Our Lady of the Snows). See the grand Byzantine icon in the altarpiece and admire the church’s original ceiling frescos.

Wander in the palace gardens to experience the estate’s harmonious designs, considered to be of equal importance to the palace. Explore the romantic English-style gardens to find one of Styria’s most significant historic gardens, featuring a scenic pond and brilliantly hued peacocks. Don’t miss the Planetary Garden in the estate’s northern corner, which features a contemporary take on the ancient planetary symbols.

Find the Joanneum’s Roman Stonework Collection, the Alte Galerie (Old Gallery) and the Coin Cabinet, all located on the Schloss Eggenberg estate.

Schloss Eggenberg is located on Graz’s eastern border, 2.1 miles (3.5 kilometres) from the centre of Graz. The estate is serviced by its own tram stop. The State Rooms are open Tuesday through Sunday from April until October but are only accessible with a guided tour. Tours are offered in English and German. The park and gardens are open year-round and can be accessed for a small fee.
