Folkets Park is a popular recreational space with an abundance of outdoor activities. This 2.4-hectare (6-acre) park has an open-air concert stage where regular live music concerts are held. There are picnic areas and shaded lawns, and for families there is a wading pool, fairground rides and animal exhibits.
The park dates back to 1891 but by the early 1990s it was considered a slum. After extensive renovations it became one of the most frequented and admired parks in the city.
A great time to visit is during one of the cultural events. See theatre performances or listen to live music on the Stora Scenen (Main Stage) or in the Nojesteatren, a theatre neighbouring the Main Stage. The park has a number of attractions for children. Come face to face with exotic animals such as crocodiles, snakes, parrots and monkeys at the Terrarium. Hold a rabbit or a guinea pig, pat a sheep or take a ride on a pony in the mini-farm. Enjoy a game of mini-golf, ride on a mini roller coaster or play on the bumper cars in the amusement park. When the weather is hot, head to the south end of the park where there is a wading pool. During winter the pool becomes a ice-skating rink.
Lay out a blanket in front of the main stage and enjoy the open field or bring a picnic and make use of the free barbecues by the wading pool. There are also a number of eateries where you can pick up a hot dog, hamburger or hot chips.
Folkets Park is located south of the city centre and a 25-minute walk from Stortorget. While there is no parking at the park, public buses stop nearby at Bergsgatan and Amiralsgatan.
