Visit a quaint 17th-century island fort, take a banana boat out on the ocean and fill up on tasty snacks from the stalls.

Long, scenic Forte Beach is the main strand of Cabo Frio. The busy bay, which takes its name from its historic fort, is packed with huts, lodgings and stores. Come here to enjoy stunning views of the verdant promontories overlooking the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Sunbathe on the sand and cool down with a dip in the invigorating ocean water. Browse the various stalls belonging to many different types of vendors. Stroll along the fine white sand with your family and beachcomb for marine objects as you go. As Cabo Frio’s principal bay, the beach has a range of bars, restaurants and kiosks that make it easy to remain here well into the evening.

Clamber over the pretty white sand dunes, which change daily as the wind affects their formations. Snap photos of the calm water at the northern end of the beach that resembles a lagoon in its stillness. Toward the south of the beach, the waves are larger, making for excellent conditions for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. Try the other watersports options, which include banana boat trips and speed boat rides.

Reach the northeastern end of the strand to see the São Mateus Fort, which was constructed in the 17th century. The white façade and light red roof of the elegant fort, which stands on a tiny islet, can be seen from the rest of the beach.

Arrive early to miss the busiest times on the beach and enjoy this lovely place in peace and quiet. The beach is particularly popular on weekend afternoons.

Forte Beach is located on the southeastern coastline, right next to the center of Cabo Frio. Drive northeast from the Cabo Frio International Airport for around 20 minutes to get here. You can also walk here in a couple of minutes from the town center of Cabo Frio. Leave plenty of time to visit some of the other highlights nearby, which include Águas Plaza, Japanese Island and Dunas Beach.
