Be entranced by the golden glow of the altar and admire the unusual baptismal font in this church that remains active in the community.

The Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption of Cabo Frio is an impressive religious gem of colonial and Baroque design. The whitewashed façade of this 17th-century structure features a large triangular pediment and a bell tower. Capture beautiful photos of this elegant building that stands on the corner of the street.

It is thought the church was built in the mid-17th century, as part of the westward growth of the town from the Passagem district on the Itajuru Channel. Note that the building was expanded and adapted in later centuries, so many of its features are newer.

Gaze up at the crucifix that tops the bell tower and the three windows above the main portal. Enter the church to see the single nave and corridor of the interior, which was painstakingly restored in the 1960s. The highlight of the church is the golden detailing surrounding the altarpiece, which includes a carved wooden image of Our Lady of the Assumption.

Inspect the lovely 17th-century baptismal font made of Lioz stone from Portugal. Attend one of the Holy Masses for a glimpse into local customs and beliefs. These services take place at least once per day.

Stroll through the spacious Porto Rocha Square on which the church stands. Relax with a book on a bench or take shelter from the sun in the elegant bandstand.

Find the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption of Cabo Frio in the center of the town. The best way to explore this small and pretty area of the town is on foot. Take the time to visit the many nearby sights. At the Carlos Scliar Workshop House, a famous artist’s living and working spaces have been carefully preserved. Also close by are the lively Fish Market of Cabo Frio and the charming Nossa Senhora da Guia church.
