The impressive Golconda Fort once protected an ancient city at the centre of a diamond empire. The fort and the city ruins around it are one of the most visited sites in Hyderabad and are a fascinating educational experience. Explore the fort’s mosques and the grand mud walls that once surrounded the city. Enter the fort to listen to the excellent acoustics within. Dating back to the 12th century, the mud fort was the work of the Kakatiya Kings.
Walk through the Bala Hissar Gate on the north side of the fort to enter. As you pass beneath it be sure to admire the arches and depth of design present. The 10-kilometre (6-mile) wall that crosses the ruined city is dotted with cannons, gateways and drawbridges once used to fight off enemy forces. Wander around the maze of walls that lead you to mosques, armories and the hilltop chambers. Look for signposts or pick up a guide map to help you find your way.
Spend some time at the legendary Rahban Cannon. The powerful weapon was an essential tool for the soldiers at Golconda Fort as invading forces approached the walls. Explore the apartments that were once home to royalty and admire the creativity of the 700-year old architecture.

Golconda Fort is located next to the Mahakali Temple just west of Hyderabad. A bus station is located next to the entrance to the fort. Cabs from the city centre will make the 11-kilometre (7-mile) journey in no time. The fort is closed Mondays and an admission fee applies.
