At the eastern entrance to the Royal Route is this ceremonial archway, a onetime royal palace which now has galleries dedicated to exhibits of art and photography.

Green Gate (Brama Zielona) is one of several resplendent gates that grace Gdańsk’s Old Town. Built in the 1560s, this huge multi-arched gateway was supposed to be a palace of Polish monarchs. Ironically, it was occupied by royalty only once. Today, view this fascinating example of 16th-century architecture and venue for art and photography expositions.

Position yourself on either side of the gate and admire its Dutch Mannerism façade. Its outstanding features include about 200 gargoyles, reliefs and sculptures by artists including Cornelis Floris. Look for the detailed carvings set above the four arches. These depict the symbols of the city of Gdańsk, Poland, Royal Prussia and an eagle associated with Prussian rulers.

The gate’s interior is managed by the National Museum in Gdańsk (Muzeum Narodowe w Gdańsk). Step inside to discover temporary expositions of ancient and contemporary art by both national and international artists. Browse the collections of the Gdańsk Gallery of Photography (Gdańsk Galeria Fotografii), located on the third floor. This gallery holds over 8,000 objects of historical, iconographical and sociological value.

Located near the eastern edge of the Old Town and on the Motława River waterfront, Green Gate is just a short walk from major city attractions. Stroll west along Long Market and Long Street, the central areas of the Royal Route. Admire the mythical Neptune’s Fountain, visit the 14th-century Artus Court and enjoy panoramic city views from the tower of Gdańsk Main Town Hall. Watch tourists and locals go by from the comfort of a café terrace.

Go to the river side of the gate and enjoy a gentle promenade along the waterfront esplanade. Gaze up at the tall merchant houses and dine at a river-facing restaurant. Learn about Gdańsk’s maritime traditions at the medieval Gdańsk Crane.

View Green Gate at any time of the day. The art and photography galleries are open from Tuesday to Sunday. Purchase a combined ticket to visit both galleries. Find full details on the National Museum in Gdańsk’s official website.
