One of Grenoble’s most popular tourist attractions, this unique ride takes visitors high over the city to a dramatic hilltop overlooking the scenery below.

The Grenoble-Bastille Cable Car is a 4-minute journey to the top of Fortress Mountain. This ride is famed for its unusual “bubble” cars, which are individual transparent domes that can transport up to six people. Soar over the rooftops of Grenoble in the clear cable cars to enjoy gorgeous views of the city as well as the Isère River and its valley.

The cable car has transported more than 14 million visitors since opening in 1934. Conclude your ride at the top of Fortress Mountain, where you can enjoy some of the city’s most picturesque scenery at an altitude of 1,558 feet (475 metres).Look down to see the Isère River cascading under Grenoble’s historic bridges.

Look up to see mountain peaks towering in all directions. Mont Blanc is to the northeast, Belledonne is to the east and Le Taillefer is southeast. Gazing south, you can also see a mountain pass that comprises part of the Route Napoléon, which the emperor once followed on his march from Elba to Grenoble.

After enjoying the view, explore some of Fortress Mountain’s numerous other attractions. In the warmer months, try the zip-lines or walk through mazes at the Acrobastille, a family-friendly adventure area. Check out the latest exhibition of contemporary art at Centre d’Art Bastille (CAB). This centre aims to introduce contemporary art to a wider audience with the help of on-site mediators who present workshops and provide explanations.

Head for a relaxing walk or a brisk hike in the surrounding Chartreuse Mountains. You’ll find several panels that map out the trails, which range from gentle walks lasting less than an hour to vigorous multi-day treks.

The best times to take the Grenoble-Bastille Cable Car are at sunrise or sunset, when the enchanting natural lighting complements the already spectacular scenery. The cable car is open year-round, with closure for a short period every January. The starting point for the cable car is found at the riverside Quai Stéphane Jay, right near the Jardin de Ville. There is a small fee to ride to the top of the hill.
