Mesmerizing lines of sparkling colour grace the rock face of the mountains opposite this major viewing point just behind the visitor centre.
Gunnison Point is a spectacular viewing platform overlooking the gorge of the Gunnison River in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. A 1,000-foot (300-meter) trail accessible to hikers of all skill levels leads to the awe-inspiring overlook. Admire the remarkable vision of the sparkling segments in the dark rock face across the gorge.
Embark on the short walk, taking in the serene ambiance and forested surroundings. Walk down the steps along the way and follow the arrows on the brown signs pointing to Gunnison Point Overlook to get to the observation deck at the end of the trail. Safety railings provide a protective boundary at the overlook. From the overlook take photos of the vista incorporating the tall rock formations and the forest decorating the valley.
Stay for the sunset and notice how the colors of the rocks seem to change. As dusk falls, the last rays of the sun bathe the mountains in a golden glow.
Just at the back of the overlook stands the South Rim Visitor Center, where you can browse various exhibits providing detail about the park and its geology. In prehistoric times, molten lava was pressed between layers of rock, producing the glittery bands in the rock face. Spot little flecks of quartz, mica and feldspar in these natural formations.
Note that the trail is best hiked from March through October, before it is covered in snow. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds. There is a fee per vehicle to enter the park.
Gunnison Point overlooks its namesake river in the heart of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It is just behind the park’s South Rim Visitor Center.
