At the Harry S. Truman Little White House you can learn about the fraught post-World War II years when the Cold War was just visible on the horizon. This was the atmosphere faced by President Harry S. Truman, who stayed for 175 days of his term at the waterfront presidential property. During this time he deliberated on some of the decisions that shaped world history. The house became known as the Little White House and has been run as an historic site and museum since 1991.
Take a guided tour to hear about some of the decisions made by one of the boldest presidents in United States’ history. Tours leave every 20 minutes and are run by enthusiastic guides with a wealth of knowledge about the history of the house and Truman’s life. Wander through rooms fitted out with historic photographs and original furniture including Truman’s poker table and bed. You’ll hear many stories from Truman’s time here. The tour lasts between 30 and 40 minutes and is included with admission.
Two short films provide an insight into the building’s history as a naval officers’ quarters. Hear about other presidents, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton, who have stayed in the house.
Walk with a guide or independently through the 1-acre (0.4 hectares) of lush botanical gardens that surround the house. Encircled by the original 19th-century wrought iron fence, the gardens are filled with tropical trees and flowers. As you walk through the ground it’s not hard to imagine what the house looked like during Truman’s time here. The gardens are being restored to their original 1940s layout.
You’ll find the Harry S. Truman Little White House in the old town area of Key West, a short walk from the Ernest Hemingway House and Museum. The Little White House is easily reached on foot or by bicycle from within the old town. Drivers can use the pay-and-display parking at Mallory Square nearby.
The Little White House is open daily. Note that the house is still sometimes used for government functions and can close on short notice. The admission fee includes a guided tour and film viewing.
