Experience a little slice of medieval Trier’s preserved heritage streetscape in this enchanting old market square at the heart of the city’s historic district.

Stroll around Hauptmarkt in Trier’s historic center to get an overview of the city’s preserved medieval character. Lined with grand old buildings and landmark structures, Hauptmarkt gives a glimpse of the city in past centuries. The busy market square remains an important hub in the city and hosts a range of community events throughout the year.

Get acquainted with the city’s heritage skyline from Hauptmarkt. After Vikings destroyed part of the old city in 882, the reigning archbishop moved the market from the river to this site. See the Marktkreuz (Market Cross) that commemorated this event in the Municipal Museum. Check out the elaborate Petrusbrunnen (Peter’s Fountain), which dates back to 1595. The fountain depicts St. Peter, the city’s patron saint, surrounded by the four virtues: Justice, Strength, Temperance and Wisdom.

Check out the spire of the Church of St. Gangolf, which looms above the square from behind a Baroque gate. At the back of the church, find a replica of one of the city’s medieval pillars. The Steipe is a reconstruction of the city’s 15th-century town hall, which was completely destroyed in World War II. Another rebuilt treasure in the square is the appropriately named Rotes Haus (Red House) with its magnificent rosy façade. The Domhotel is a stunning example of preserved neoclassical architecture in the square.

Sit at one of the cafés and restaurants that face Hauptmarkt and spend some time people-watching. Have coffee or a meal and check out the range of stalls that regularly sell goods in the square. You might pick up seasonal produce, freshly baked bread or a sweet treat.

From the square, you can easily reach the Jewish Quarter (Judendgasse) and the Liebfrauen Basilika Cathedral. Visit Hauptmarkt in June to experience the city’s Old Town Festival or in December for the annual Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market).

Hauptmarkt is located in Trier’s historic center. Walk here from central bus stops or from the city’s main train station in 12 minutes.
