Healesville Sanctuary

Get up close and personal with Australia’s iconic wildlife and learn how rare native species are protected in of one of the country’s most famous wildlife parks.

The Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary is dedicated to conserving native Australian animals, with a strong focus on animal care and public education. View its fascinating inhabitants in a lush environment that resembles their natural surroundings.

The park is spread out over 70 acres (30 hectares) of bushland, so allow a few hours to roam around at your own leisure. Pause regularly to admire some of the many iconic Australian creatures on display, such as kangaroos, koalas, wombats and emus.

Make sure you don’t miss out on hearing the experts share in-depth information. See some of the animals up close during the Keeper Talksand thepetting and feeding sessions by checking the sanctuary’s timetable. Watch in awe as the birds of prey and parrots show off their skills during the Spirits of the Sky show. Sit quietly and take in the world of the elusive platypus at the unique Tales from Platypus Creek show. Get the kids involved at Fighting Extinction Headquarters and Future Vets or book a Close-up Encounter for hands-on experiences.

The Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary offers some uniquely Australian experiences as well. Learn about Aboriginal culture and find out how the Aborigines, as custodians of this land, work in harmony with nature and the environment.

Discover how the sanctuary itself also plays an important role in animal conservation by visiting the on-site Australian Wildlife Health Centre. Over 1,500 native animals are cared for each year by the dedicated team of vets and nurses of this animal hospital. Visit some of the recovering patients or watch a vet operate or treat a sick or injured animal.

After watching the animals being fed, you may want something to eat for yourself as well. The sanctuary has three different dining premises, ranging from simple snacks to more substantial options. The restaurant provides a chance to taste the fresh produce and wine from the local region. Pay a visit to the shop for an animal-themed souvenir or gift.

The Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary is open daily. Entry fees apply. Expect to pay additional fees for special scheduled activities and experiences in the park. The sanctuary can be reached by car, with free on-site parking available, and bus tours or public transportation from either Melbourne or Healesville.
