Ho'okipa Beach Park is an acclaimed windsurfing destination on Maui’s northern coast. The sheltered bay comprises a stretch of white, powdery sand backed by grassy knolls and small cliffs. Listen to the crash of some of Hawaii’s best waves in this surfing haven.
Stroll along the length of the beach with your family and enjoy the views of the ocean. Encounter the exposed reef, where you can often see Hawaiian green sea turtles.
Sunbathe on the crunchy sand and work on your tan, before cooling off with a dip in the water. Bring your kids to play in the small tide pools that form on the beach. Climb to the summit of the beach’s eastern cliff for the Ho'okipa Lookout, which offers a spectacular view of the bay.
Bring snacks and refreshments to make a picnic on one of the three pavilions. The designated picnic areas contain permanent tables and barbecue grills. Join the many surfers and windsurfers on the consistent waves. Watch professionals in action on their boards from the stretch of sand.
Attend some of the events and competitions that take place year-round. Among the highlights are the Aloha Classic and the Red Bull surfing tournaments. The tough rip currents, sudden strong winds and shallow reef make for advanced surfing conditions that could overwhelm a novice.
The beach has restroom facilities, outdoor showers and drinking water from taps and fountains. Lifeguards patrol the area daily from morning until late afternoon.
Ho'okipa Beach Park is in the central part of the northern coast on the island of Maui. Leave your car in one of the three parking lots near the beach. Visit nearby landmarks, such as Makawao Forest Reserve, Ku’au Evangelical Cemetery and Maliko Bay.
