Encounter hundreds of butterflies in a tropical rainforest setting, butterfly-friendly birds and an indoor waterfall at this popular Key West attraction.

Marvel at the colours of approximately 60 different butterfly species as you meander through the tropical rainforest of the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory glasshouse. Photograph close-up views of nature’s “flowers of the sky”. The conservatory is one of the most popular attractions in the city. Learn about butterfly life cycles, spot the 20 colourful species of butterfly-friendly birds and enjoy the tranquillity of the tropical surrounds and waterfall.

Before you enter the glasshouse spend some time in the Learning Center. Find out about the feeding patterns, breeding and stages of a butterfly’s life from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis to fully formed adult butterfly. In the interactive educational facility you can watch caterpillars feeding on plants.

Inside the glasshouse, you’ll notice a change in temperature. Humid conditions and consistent temperatures allow the butterflies to prosper throughout the year. Clouds of the brightly coloured insects float between the trees, stopping to rest on flowers and visitors. Near closing time at dusk you may be lucky enough to see an owl butterfly. These are named for the spots on their wings that resemble owl eyes. The owl butterfly’s wingspan is impressive at 28 centimetres (11 inches).

Look for bright red canaries and blue finches as they zip between the low-hanging flowering plants. Take care as you walk not to step on resting butterflies or the pretty little Chinese painted quails. In the Wings of Imagination gallery you can browse the works of conservatory owner, Sam Trophia. The artist has put together stunning arrangements of preserved butterflies. Find a souvenir or take home a preserved butterfly in a display case from the gift shop.

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is located at the South Beach end of Duval Street. Come on foot from most areas of Key West. Free parking is available in the area.

The conservatory is open every day. An admission fee applies, with a reduced price for children, seniors and military visitors. There is free entry for children under 4 years old.
