Mallory Square is the number one place in Key West to enjoy the sunset. As well as plenty of dining options and lively nightlife, the waterfront square is host to a nightly celebration of the stunning sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. Two hours before sunset the square is filled with performers, arts and crafts stalls, musicians and food vendors. Hundreds of spectators gather to enjoy the festive atmosphere and witness the intense colours of sunsets here.
Browse through the interesting shops of Mallory Square for some souvenirs as you wait for the festivities to begin. You’ll find an emporium of seashells, natural sponges and nautical homewares, Key Lime products, fashion, jewellery and even a rum distillery.
Enjoy an ice cream or some of the street food made with freshly caught seafood and locally grown produce. Watch tightrope walkers and listen to the sounds of local musicians. Kids will love the antics of the clowns and magicians, and illusionists will delight the young and young at heart.
As the sun gets closer to the horizon all eyes turn toward the gulf. Don’t forget your camera to capture some memorable shots of high-wire fire jugglers and unicyclists silhouetted by the blazing colours of sunset. The Key West sunset has inspired famous writers such as Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams.
As the colours fade to darkness, the fun continues at the Mallory Square restaurants. Try Cuban conch cuisine, oysters and lobsters as you listen to live music. Enjoy the friendly atmosphere and meet some of the locals and other holidaymakers in the bars. There are plenty of good hotels around the square, so it’s not far to a comfortable bed.
Mallory Square can easily be reached on foot or by bicycle from most accommodation in Key West. You can find some pay-and-display parking in the area, but avoid driving around sunset when the area is busiest.
