Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant and bustling city that is crammed full of exciting attractions, and with entertainment options to suit all tastes and budgets, there really is something for everyone.
Families will love the National Zoo which is home to more than 459 animal species. Bargain hunters can source unusual souvenirs before grabbing a bite to eat from any of the hawker stalls on Petaling Street. If it’s a bit of culture you’re after, wander around Merdeka Square and admire the architectural heritage of the buildings that surround the city’s main civic space. Historically, this is a site of enormous national significance as it was here that Malaysia declared its independence from Britain in 1957.
Visit the Jamek Mosque (Masjid Jamek), one of the oldest and most venerable mosques in Kuala Lumpur and a wonderful example of soft Moorish architecture. In contrast, the sharp minaret of the National Mosque of Malaysia stands stark against the city skyline, in a nod to modernity.
Take time out to relax in the Lake Gardens. This oasis of calm was created during the colonial era and offers a wonderful escape from the hubbub of the city. This sculpted park is rich with native plants, trees and shrubs and is only a stone’s throw away from the noisy and colourful Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. For an alternative urban retreat, head to the KLCC Park and enjoy the spectacle of the Lake Symphony as synchronised water fountains create dazzling displays.
Looking for that perfect snapshot of the city? The Kuala Lumpur Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur) stands at a healthy 421 metres above street level and offers incredible panoramic views. However, there is some strong competition in the form of the magnificent Petronas Twin Towers, which punch up into the sky at an incredible 452 metres. Their highlight is the observation deck on the 86th floor, which offers a stunning vista that spectacularly sweeps across the city.
Finally, take time out to recharge your spiritual batteries and soak up some Hindu culture at the inspiring Batu Caves. Marvel at the ornate statues and artwork in the awe-inspiring temples. This sacred site offers a welcome respite from the city’s main tourist attractions and is a must on any Malaysian itinerary.
