A good place to start your tour is in the main village, also called Kvalsund. It sits amid a landscape of hills along the Kvalsundet Strait. Go for a stroll around the harbor and head over to Kvalsund Church. This wooden structure was built in 1936 and was the only building in the area that survived World War II. In the center of the village, find two large stones with inscriptions that are said to be about 2,500 years old.
Cross Kvalsund Bridge by foot, bike or car. This striking suspension bridge connects Kvalsund with Kvaløya, an island that lends itself to pleasant hikes through wild scenery. Trek to the summits of Mount Tyven and Mount Steinfjellet.
When you are back on the mainland, enjoy many more outdoor adventures. Explore the mountains, ravines, waterfalls and stretches of pine forest in Stabbursdalen National Park. Kvalsund also encompasses part of Seiland National Park on the island of Seiland. Swim in Neverfjord Lake and cycle along the old tracks and cart ways in the predominately flat terrain of Porsa.
Skaidi presents numerous opportunities for biking and hiking in dense woodland. While here, chase the northern lights on a snowmobiling tour at Skaidi Skiheiser and ski down its groomed slopes. Fish for salmon in the nearby Repparfjord River.
During your vacation in the region, put the village of Kokelv on your itinerary to learn about the area's indigenous history and culture. Tour the Kokelv Coastal Sámi Museum and view photographs and artifacts of the Sami people. Among the exhibits are old boats, furniture and household items.
