Malmo Museum comprises a collection of museums that are situated inside Sweden’s oldest-standing castle and in the grounds surrounding it. Learn about the history of the castle, see photography exhibitions and contemporary Nordic arts, admire tropical fish in the aquarium and explore the inside of a submarine.
Malmo Museum is easy to navigate. The exhibitions halls are grouped together inside the castle and along Malmohusvagen Street.
Begin your visit in the main hall. Rent the audio guide for a 2-hour tour through the castle. Learn about the kings and queens who lived here and the personalities who influenced the royal house. During the summer months there are free guided tours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
In the Malmo Art Museum are exhibitions with 16th-century Nordic art and contemporary art. Discover the works of present day Scandinavian artists such as Annika von Hausswolff and Dan Wolgers.
Learn about the natural wonders of the world in the Natural History Museum. Get up close to the life-sized model giraffe and spot 12,000 species of stuffed birds in the displays. See pythons and glimpse real-life piranhas in the aquarium.
Visit the Kommendanthuset (Commander’s House), which is outside the castle entrance. Look at the revolving photography exhibitions in the Room for Photography and step inside the learning centre to watch your children discover Nordic traditions. Explore a real submarine in the nearby Technology and Maritime Museum, see a documentary about Malmo’s past and discover the development of hand-powered machinery from steam, to gasoline and electric engines.
Malmo Museum is open daily with the exception of public holidays. Complete opening hours can be found on the official Malmo Stad (city) website. The museum is easily accessible from the city centre and is close to other attractions such as Kungsparken and Stortorget. Parking is available for a fee in front of the castle.
