The McManus Galleries and Museum displays magnificent collections of art and special exhibits within a breathtaking building. The imposing Gothic Revival-style structure has been the core of arts and culture in the city since 1867. Spend some time wandering its vast halls and expertly curated galleries to see collections of historical objects and relics, as well as decorative and fine art from Scotland and around the world.
Originally commissioned as a memorial to Prince Albert, the McManus Galleries and Museum is comprised of eight different galleries over two floors. Begin your visit to the McManus by exploring its grounds and admiring the ornate architecture of the building. Gaze up to see its four main turrets, steeply pitched roof and spire. Walk up the central staircase to the main doors and begin your journey through 400 million years of history.
Learn about Dundee’s local history, from the life of early humans to technological and cultural feats in industry and the arts. Check out the Landscapes and Lives exhibit and The Making of Modern Dundee to learn about the city’s origins and fascinating history. See archaeological artifacts such as a log boat from the Tay and the Pictish Stones, as well as a collection of whaling relics and a scale model of the Old Town.
Check out the traditional-style Victorian Art Gallery, complete with a vaulted glass ceiling and decorative plasterwork. The Long Gallery features fine and decorative art collections, while the 20th Century Gallery showcases nationally significant works from the 1900s.
