Get your fill of the tastes, smells and energy of South America in this bustling and artfully designed market.

The Mercado Municipal (Municipal Market) is one of São Paulo’s powerhouses for local trade. Take a few hours to browse a large range of regionally sourced fruits, vegetables, nuts, meats and spices all under one roof. Visit for a meal, a tasty snack or just to witness the bustling crowds vying for world-class produce.

Stroll the long aisles of the market and sample some of the city’s unique flavours. Try Brazil’s distinctive green oranges or purchase a small watermelon for a juicy snack later. The adventurous may want to try pig face and other curious meat delicacies. Otherwise, browse an impressive selection of nuts, spices and condiments that are easy to snack on and add zest to any dish.

When you get hungry, purchase simple meals like mortadella sandwiches or pastels, which are pastries stuffed with local meats and cheeses. Friendly fish-stall owners will be happy to fry a quick snack for you on the spot.

Alternatively, take a seat at one of the restaurants on the market’s upper floors. Huge stained-glass windows provide a nice view while you eat. Though these meals can be expensive, they are made with excellent local produce.

Head to one of the market’s souvenir stores and purchase a shirt to remember your stay. Stalls selling textiles and ceramics can also be found among the food displays.

Afterward, head outside the market and admire its striking façade, which was built in 1933. Its design features golden stone and domes that make a spectacular photo, particularly after dark when the building is lit up.

After exploring the Mercado, visit the nearby “cereal district” to see local merchants selling bags of grains and racks of spices.

The Mercado Municipal is located just north of São Paulo central. It is open daily from early morning until evening year-round. Paid parking is available nearby though spots are limited. Be sure to take precautions against pickpockets in the busy weekend crowds.
