The Mississippi State Capitol is a magnificent turn-of-the-century building and the home of the state’s Legislature. Dating back to 1903, this beautiful beaux-arts building is Jackson’s third capitol and currently houses legislative and executive branches. Go on a tour of the stunning building and learn about its history and significance. Examine its lavish interior and sit in on a legislative session, held in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Walk into the Mississippi State Capitol and take in the views of the stunning building. The elegant structure features a large portico with six central columns. A gold leaf-gilded statue of an eagle crowns the capitol’s lavish dome. The building was constructed to take the place of the Old Capitol Building, which is now home to the Old Capitol Museum.
On the first floor, is the Hall of Governors. See portraits of Mississippi’s governors, dating back to the Mississippi Territory’s creation in 1798. The second floor houses the former State Library and Supreme Court chambers. The Legislature is situated on the Mississippi State Capitol’s third floor, as well as the offices of the governor, the lieutenant governor and the speaker of the house. You can visit the public viewing balconies for the Legislature on the fourth floor.
Stroll around the Mississippi State Capitol grounds to spot a replica of the Liberty Bell and a battleship figurehead from the second U.S.S. Mississippi. Wander amid the magnolia trees dotted throughout the grounds. The magnolia is the state tree of Mississippi.
The Mississippi State Capitol is located in historic downtown Jackson on a large city block. Guided tours are free of charge and are given four times daily during the week. Self-guided tours are also welcome at the capitol. Check the Mississippi State Capitol website or call its Visitor Services office to find out when the Legislature is in session. The building is closed on weekends.
