The Missouri History Museum provides a fascinating insight into how the state, and its capital city, has developed over the years. From Civil War correspondence to artifacts from the 1904 World's Fair, there's a wealth of eclectic treasures to discover. What's more, specially designed games, puzzles and video stations are dotted throughout the museum to keep younger visitors entertained.
The museum was founded in 1866 to preserve the history of the state for future generations. The entrance and permanent collection are housed in a magnificent neoclassical building, which was built in 1913 on the site of the entrance to the 1904 World's Fair.
Within the permanent collection, one whole gallery is dedicated to the World's Fair itself, while another two explore the history of the city. The artifacts and images in the World's Fair gallery are a delight highlights include a beautiful Chinese desk and numerous photographs. Explore the St. Louis galleries to find out about Charles Lindbergh's ground-breaking solo flight, and to see a replica of his iconic plane, the Spirit of St. Louis. The model, which hangs from the ceiling of the Great Hall, is a prop from the eponymous 1957 film.
Check the museum website for information about temporary exhibits. Previous subjects explored include the Ice Age and the history of Gridiron (American football). The Missouri History Museum also hosts several events during the year. Reserve a seat at a jazz concert or poetry reading, or sign up to attend a lecture given by one of the museum's knowledgeable curators.
The popular museum restaurant makes for a delightful lunch spot, and prides itself on serving the best local and regional produce. Weekend brunch is a firm favourite with locals, and booking ahead is advised. Before you leave the museum, don't forget to browse the books and memorabilia in the gift shop.
The Missouri History Museum is open every day and admission is free, although there may be a small charge for some temporary exhibitions. You'll find the museum west of St. Louis city centre, at the northern end of Forest Park. In terms of transport, the best option is to take the Metro from the city centre, as parking onsite is limited.
