Ever-present over the city, Monserrate offers great sightseeing opportunities for visitors to Bogota. Ride a gondola up this 3,152-metre (10,341-foot) mountain to experience unbeaten views of the landscape and visit a unique church built near the peak.
During the gondola ride, capture a breathtaking panorama of mountainous scenery. Alternatively, catch the funicular train and spot wildlife amongst native plants as you climb the slope. If you're up for a challenge, put on some hiking boots and walk a marked trail that traverses the mountain forest to the lookout. The walk takes around an hour.
This fertile environment hosts a diverse ecosystem of birds and mammals. Spot darting weasels and scavenging foxes. Also watch for the blurry wings of hummingbirds as well as swallows and wrens. From the summit, point out city landmarks like Guadalupe Hill and Plaza de Toros de Santamaría (Santamaría Bullring). Enjoy a meal with a view at one of two mountaintop restaurants, or bring a picnic.
Admire the curious Sanctuary of Monserrate, which was built here in the 17th century. Within its whitewashed exterior, the statue of El Señor Caido (Fallen Lord) attracts pilgrims throughout the year. The names of both the church and mountain are derived from Barcelona's Montserrat mountain.
Monserrate rises from the foothills just northeast of Bogotá’s city centre. Get there using public buses or the subway, which both stop nearby. The gondola station and funicular train are both served by a hop-on, hop-off tourist bus. After conquering the mountain, visit the Casa Quinta Museo de Bolívar or Torre Colpatria.
Operating hours of the gondola, train and walking trail are listed on the mountain’s official website. If visiting on Sunday, prepare for large crowds of pilgrims making their way to the mountaintop sanctuary.
