Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve

Go paragliding, cycling and trekking in this vast mountainous park to encounter its charming streams, heathland vegetation and dominant peaks.

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is a park with zigzagging trails that carve up the undulating terrain. It comprises 4,347 acres (1,759 hectares) of shrubland that twirls around the behemoth peak of Mont Rochelle. Clamber up the namesake mountain and appreciate the panoramic views of the vast valley of Franschhoek.

Hike with your family and friends along more than 19 miles (30 kilometers) of maintained trails and chat with fellow walkers along the way. Select the easy Breakfast Rock Trail for a short 1-hour hike. The moderate Pedekop Trail will take 6 to 7 hours.

Admire the range of plants in this eclectic area known for its montane fynbos. This heathland vegetation includes bulbous plants, shrubby plants with flowers and restios, which resemble grass. Purchase a pamphlet for a greater understanding of the plants and animals in the park.

Stroll alongside one of the streams of water, which have the most water in winter. The water appears pale brown, but it is safe to drink. Gaze up at the daunting peaks of DuToitskop, Middagkrans and Perdekop.

Rent a bike from one of the companies in the town and ride along some of the smoother trails. Gaze up at the paragliders that make use of the high winds to join birds soaring across the sky.

Pay a fee for a park permit and get free entrance for children who are accompanied by an adult. Get a map for the park from the nearby Huguenot Museum or the Franschhoek Tourism Office. Vehicles and dogs are not permitted beyond the entrance in this pedestrian area. Expect cold, rainy winters with snow flurries on higher ground. Summers are hot, dry and windy.

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is east of the main wineries and museums of Franschhoek. Drive east for 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the Huguenot Memorial to get here. Leave your car in the designated parking lot.
