Visit the Museo Revoltella (Revoltella Museum) to discover a collection of some 350 works of art by respected Italian artists. The museum opened in 1872, three years after the late Baron Pasquale Revoltella bequeathed his home and its contents to the city. The Museo Revoltella exhibits both the personal collection of the baron and those acquired using the funds he donated. Its galleries spread throughout the rooms of three adjoining palaces.
Enter via the neo-Renaissance Palazzo Revoltella and browse displays that provide an introduction to the exhibitions. Then, climb a grand staircase that leads to the lavishly ornamented rooms once occupied by the museum’s founder, including a ballroom, library and neoclassical hall. Admire the elegant chandeliers, gilded friezes and original furniture. See works by artists such as Antonio Canova, Giuseppe Tominz and Pietro Magni.
Go to the galleries in the interconnecting Palazzo Brunner to find exhibitions grouped by chronological periods. Appreciate the talents of Italian artists from the late 19th century and early 20th century. Spot pieces by artists from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and nationwide objects originating in the latter half of the 1900s. Among the many famous names featured are Filippo Palizzi, Giorgio di Chirico, Giuseppe di Nittis and Mirko Basaldella.
From the museum’s upper floor you can step out on to a terrace designed by Venetian-born sculptor Carlo Scarpa. Take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views over nearby Piazza Venezia, the port and the rooftops of the city’s medieval district. From July to September the terrace is also an alfresco café.
Located in Trieste’s city center, the museum is within easy walking distance of other major city attractions. The Basilica Paleocristiana and Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia are less than 10 minutes away on foot. Public buses stop close to the museum’s entrance and there are ample parking spaces at the port.
The Museo Revoltella is open from Wednesday to Monday and there is an admission fee. Guided tours are available, for a fee, by prior arrangement. Check the museum’s official website for full details.
