The largest public art collection in the Asturias region is contained within three buildings where you can see works by artists including Picasso and Goya.

The Museum of Fine Arts is a magnificent institution with galleries spread across three buildings in the old quarter of the city. Dating back to the 19th century, the museum has long played a major role in the artistic and cultural development of Oviedo. Inspect the thousands of items on display for a comprehensive understanding of regional and foreign works of art.

Admire the majestic façades of the three buildings containing the museum. These include the 20th-century House of Solís-Carbajal, the 17th-century House of Oviedo-Portal and the Palacio de Velarde, from the 1700s. Enter the buildings to examine the range of paintings, as well as sculptures, drawings and photography.

Explore the collections dating from the Middle Ages through to the 20th century. The museum is known for its excellent Spanish, Italian and Flemish paintings that give an insight into the various European schools of art.

View works by such esteemed artists as Goya, Picasso and El Greco. Look through the range of temporary exhibits put on in these galleries year round. The fascinating works in the industrial arts section include a large assortment of glass and earthenware objects.

Visit the impressive and extensive library and browse the rows of books on art. It includes the former private book collection of art historian Diego Angulo. Attend a workshop or course on artistic themes and concepts.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from late morning until evening, with a closure for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Enter for free.

The Museum of Fine Arts is in the core of the old town district of Oviedo. Get a bus to one of the stops in the area and walk here within a few minutes. Explore the surrounding attractions, such as the Oviedo Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum of Asturias and the Palacio de Bernaldo Quirós.
