We enjoyed the island, it was beautiful. The food was good and plentiful but got fed the same things over and over. We knew what to expect from a homestay but we found that there was nothing to do except snorkle without paying for activity fees. So bring lots of cash! We expected to be asked for school donation and we did, but was not ok with being asked for donating to their family directly. We felt that paying for the homestay fee and for the activities was sufficient. But it was uncomfortable to be constantly told how much money they needed (this was just one individual doing this) Most everyone else was lovely. So try it out but be aware. Oh... and there was no kava ceremony or cultural activities unless you request and pay.

Booked Navotua, got Malakati.
Although we booked Navotua homestay, our conformation email said we would be staying on the other side of the island at Malakati, so this review is of Malakati Homestay. The villagers were nice and welcoming, interacting with the children was our highlight and the proximity to a swimable beach was great. There were a few mishaps at the beginning of our stay which left us kind of sour.Firstly, the change in location was a little unsettling as we researched Navotua only, however, in the end Malakati was nice. There are a few people in charge of the homestay, on and off the island, so there is a lot of miscommunication between contacts. We booked for 2 people, however, when we FINALLY got to the island, they were surprised to see 2 of us and had only prepared one coconut and one flower necklace (not a huge deal for us) Our email also mentioned brining Kava to present to the chief, which is understandable, however we brought the powder, as we've seen been presented on other village tours. When we got to the village, our contact said that the root is preferred. We kind of felt like idiots. Also, once on the island,we were told that $10FJD each was also to be presented to the cheif. This was not mentioned in the email so we were left dumbfounded when we were told this new information.Malakati has only been running for less than a year so I think the villagers are still trying to figure out what tourist want out of their stay. Overall, great experience. We loved it.

This is also real Fiji
This is an unique, authentic Fiji village homestay. The whole village is warm, welcoming and beautiful. Anyone wanting a real insight into Fiji should experience this. It is not for those wanting the luxury of expensive resorts. Your fee helps self sufficient Fijians instead of wealthy foreign resort owners. The setting and view are spectacularly beautiful.

Rustic and beautiful
I really enjoyed my time at Navotua. It is a rustic homestay and you must be conscious of where you are. Ladies, you must wear a sarong or long skirt when walking around the village. The locals will be as friendly to you as you are to them, smile often. Drink the cava (preferably from your own bowl). The mice will find any food in your Bure, but there is plenty on offer during your stay so no need to bring any. 3-4 nights is a perfect length stay, unless you really enjoy the basic/rustic life. One bathroom to share with the other two tourist bures, and no water pressure in the shower. Take plenty of cash to make the most of massages, markets, dance performances, fishing trips, etc. My only regret was taking insufficient cash. A menu of options and prices would have been useful prior to departure to Navotua. But if all else fails, sitting in a hammock by the beach and reading a book is pretty amazing. Take snorkelling gear and you're set!

Give it a chance, relax & you will be overwhelmed
Navatoua is a Pacific Island village of about 20 families, they are authentic, peaceful, caring. No grog, no motor cars, no fumes; just beautiful people happy to share their island heaven. We are priviledged to have each meal with a different family in their home; fresh fish, crabs, casava, rice and vegetables and home baked wood fire bread, chatting with the family, it was special. The recent cyclone wiped out all their tropical fruit but the new crop is nearly ripe. The Fiji govt has built a new small school and the teacher and gorgeous kids want you to come and say hullo and learn where you come from. They beam, sing and laugh. Seize the moment, come alive, take a chance; swim in the huge cave, go crabbing in the mangroves with the happy locals, walk the palm lined white beaches and swim the pristine ocean, walk and maybe lend a hand in their vegetable gardens. We stayed for 7 days but it could have been a lot longer because you slowly ease into the lifestyle, the kids are just so friendly but respectfull. Two or 3 days is not enough to experience all that one can do..... as well as just sitting in this idylic place. Be part of a family simple business making pure coconut oil and soap.

Hier muss unbedingt was getan werden.
