Home to some of the world’s most iconic works of art, this globally recognised museum also offers one of Kansas City’s best outdoor spaces.

Located in the heart of Kansas City, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art contains a world-renowned collection that will delight art aficionados and casual visitors alike. Save your money for the museum store, as admission is free year-round.

Take a mobile audio tour to explore the museum and its grounds or talk with docents as they lead you on a guided tour of select exhibits. The historic building houses art from all over the world and showcases both ancient and contemporary pieces. Explore native pottery and jewellery in the American Indian Collection or admire painted screens and kimonos in the Japanese Room. The Ancient Art Collection features pieces that date back thousands of years. No matter which cultures interest you, African, European, Chinese or American, the Nelson-Atkins Museum has them all.

Step into the Bloch Building to see contemporary works by Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol. The famed Hallmark Collection showcases the history of photography and some of the world’s most iconic images.

The Ford Learning Centre hosts art education programmes throughout the year. Listen to lectures from renowned art historians while the children engage in arts and crafts classes. The Spencer Art Reference Library contains 180,000 volumes and provides an ideal setting to learn more about your favourite artists.

Enjoy a unique dining experience at the Rozzelle Court Restaurant. Located in the museum courtyard, the restaurant provides an excellent menu, live music and a relaxed setting.

Step outside the museum’s historic structure and explore the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park. Spanning 22 acres (8.9 hectares), the grassy expanse is dotted with more than 30 works of art and is home to the largest collection of Henry Moore sculptures in the United States. Snap a photo next to the famous “Shuttlecocks,” pack a picnic lunch, or go for a walk or toss a ball for your dog with famous sculptures providing the backdrop.

The museum is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and major holidays. Walk-in tours are available throughout the day during open hours. A parking garage is available onsite, or visitors can take the direct bus route from downtown.
