Meander along the streets of Corfu Town’s historic heart to spot centuries-old landmarks, shop for local handicrafts and experience the lively atmosphere.

The Old Town marks the historical center of Corfu Town, a fascinating district of busy squares, graceful mansions, magnificent palaces and grand fortresses. Take time to wander the maze-like streets lined with a legacy of British, French, Greek and Italian influences. In 2007, UNESCO added the district to its list of World Heritage Sites.

At the heart of Old Town, picturesque Spianada Square resembles a French-style garden, with rows of trees and large green lawns. Cricket matches took place here during the British colonial years. Check out the splendid architecture that surrounds the square, including the Ionian Academy and an ornate Victorian bandstand. Go to the neoclassical Palace of St. Michael and St. George, which houses the Museum of Asian Art.

Stroll along Liston Promenade, a street that mimics rue de Rivoli in Paris. Originally reserved for aristocracy, today it is the focus of the Old Town’s social scene. Find cafés, restaurants and boutiques beneath the promenade’s elegant arcades. Food and drink is more expensive here than in other areas of Corfu Town but the atmosphere and people-watching opportunities are unrivaled. Observe courting couples, camera-laden tourists and old men reading newspapers.

Enjoy browsing the shops located along the narrow streets that lead from Liston Promenade. Find sellers of gold, jewelry and handmade lace plus shops with local produce such as wild honey. Alternatively, visit the 16th-century Spyridon Church. Marvel at the church’s roof, which depicts events from the life of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu.

Don’t miss Corfu Town’s two impressive Venetian forts, which stand on either side of the Old Town. Look for a Roman temple and a British-built church within the Old Fortress. Climb the fortress’ battlements for sweeping views of Corfu’s coastline. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels and staircases at the New Fortress. Experience the bustle of one of Corfu’s liveliest fresh food markets, which takes place around the fortress’ dry moat.

The Old Town sits in the northeast corner of Corfu Town and overlooks the Ionian Sea. Enjoy getting around on foot as the major attractions are within walking distance of each other.
