From the moment you step foot in the Paramount Theatre’s lobby you’ll be taken by its attention to detail and lavish decoration. Take your seat in the theatre early enough to see your surroundings before the lights are dimmed. Visit during the day to join a guided tour of the building and to enjoy an afternoon drink at the beautiful theatre bar. While the performances are always impressive, many visit the Paramount Theatre just for the architecture.
Completed in 1931, the art deco building is the work of architect Timothy L. Pflueger. At the time it was the largest multipurpose theatre in the state, catering for some 3,000 people. The large stage has been graced by stars such as Bruce Springsteen and Bob Marley, Bill Cosby and Chris Rock, as well as classical ensembles like the Oakland East Bay Symphony Orchestra. Today the theatre is among the most famous venues in California.
Don your Sunday best and head to the Paramount to catch a performance by the Oakland Ballet Company, who present classical performances in both May and December. Throughout the year the diverse program presents rock concerts from some of the world’s most famous bands, well-known comedians and screenings of major Hollywood films.
Regardless of the event taking place you’ll have a chance to explore the stunning building. See the grand lobby and its “canopy of light”, a golden glow that drenches the ceiling and walls. Take a seat at the bar or visit the men’s and women’s smoking rooms. Tours are offered on the first and third Saturdays of each month and last approximately 2 hours.
The Paramount Theatre is located on Broadway in central Oakland. The theatre is surrounded by public transport but can be reached on foot from most downtown locations. Tickets for events can be purchased online or from the Paramount Theatre box office.
