See a touch of Cuba along the Catalonian coast at this elaborate and luxurious 19th-century palace and garden complex partially designed by Antoni Gaudi.

Set amid lime trees and palms, Parc Samà is the ultimate expression of “Indiano,” an architectural and gardening craze that swept Spain during the return of aristocratic families from the Americas in the 19th century. Travel back in time and across the world in its romantic garden buildings, some designed by famed Spanish artist Antoni Gaudí. Stroll down its narrow paths, meet the animals that still live in the Samà family’s personal zoo and appreciate the varied sights and smells.

Take a tour of the striking architecture that dots the park. The run-down splendor of the old palace stands out markedly against the lush green of the park’s plant life. Man-made grottoes, mounds and bridges have the otherworldly appearance of elfin structures.

Near the palace, buy snacks for the deer that roam within a roomy enclosure. Appreciate the lush decorations on the Pavelló dels Lloros (Pavilion of the Parrots), where chattering birds fill the air with song. Look up at the Torre de l’Angle, named for its stark geometric forms. Machine guns were stored here during military occupation in the 1930s.

In addition to admiring buildings, meander through the gardens, where plane trees jostle for space with citrus and palms. The artfully designed mounded buildings and bridges are inspired by the romantic gardening craze that swept Spain in the 19th century. Lounge near the lake and waterfall as turtles swim below the surface and ducks paddle serenely on the clear water.

Parc Samà is northwest of Cambrils. Drive here in 10 to 15 minutes from the main train station or the city center. Several local hotels offer shuttle service to the gardens. Free parking is available on site. Parc Samà is open year round, generally from mid-morning to sundown. Hours vary slightly depending on the month. There is a fee for entry, with discounts for children and seniors.
