Ridges, mountains and ravines make up an otherworldly terrain full of intriguing plants and animals in the oldest part of the island.

With its great range of rock formations, Pilancones Natural Park provides some of Gran Canaria’s most spectacular views. It is filled with exotic vegetation and animals, making it an ideal spot for hiking and bird-watching. Climb up to the peaks of the hills for views stretching across much of the island.

Embark on a trek through this vast park, ensuring you bring enough water and snacks for the trip. Take along your binoculars to zoom in on some of the majestic birds perching in the Canarian pine forests. Among the highlights are the great spotted woodpecker and the blue chaffinch.

Set down a blanket to relax next to a charming stream. Enjoy an outdoor lunch with the sound of the rushing water in the background. You’ll spot a variety of water birds near the reservoirs and creeks. Check out the various archaeological sights, where excavations of pre-Hispanic tools took place.

As you make your way through the park, inspect the exotic vegetation. Notice the remarkable tops of the dragon trees, with their leaves resembling spiky hair. Some of the park’s best landmarks include the lake near Ayagaures known as Embalse de Gambusia and the views of the white buildings of Fataga. Expert hikers will enjoy the challenges set by the Pino Pilancones-Ayagaures Trail that runs for about 10 miles (16 kilometers).

Consider wearing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect against the elements. The park is open for free at all times throughout the year.

Located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Pilancones Natural Park covers a large portion of the southern half of Gran Canaria. From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, drive south for about 38 miles (61 kilometers) to get here in less than 2 hours. Explore the region for other picturesque parks, such as the Caldera de los Marteles, Roque Nublo Rural Park and Parque Natural Tamadaba.
