The beautiful Planty gardens have fountains, statues, an array of colourful flowerbeds and well-tended lawns. These 30 landscaped gardens surround Krakow’s Old Town (Stare Miasto) and are a great spot to base yourself as you explore the Old Town’s renowned attractions. Sit on one of the benches that are throughout the park and admire the gardens and the views of the red-brick university buildings. Peak over the walls to the Dominican Monastery gardens.
Planty gardens were built between 1822 and 1830 as a replacement for the neglected old city walls. The 21 hectares (52 acres) of grounds stretch along a 4-kilometre (2.5-mile) ring around the Old Town. Today, you can walk along the connecting paths and admire the individually styled garden beds. Enjoy the hour-long walk around the park or take time out from visiting the other attractions in the Old Town.
Enter the grounds at the foot of the castle and begin at the Wawel Garden. The first building here is the neo-Gothic brick seminary. Meander along the paths and under trees, see fountains, statues and monuments and admire the uniquely designed flowerbeds. With the exception of the middle of winter, the gardens are designed so that there are plants in bloom for most of the year. Next to the Barbican building are weeping willows and a wrought iron bridge that crosses over a pond.
Stop and have something to eat at one of the cafés, restaurants or bars that line the gardens or bring your own picnic. During the warm summer months, the open lawns are a great place to spread a blanket and relax.
The best time of year to visit the Planty gardens are during spring and summer when the flowers are in full bloom. It is also nice to visit during the winter months when snow sits on the trees and covers the ground. The gardens are accessible 24 hours a day and are free to enter. While the park is generally safe after dark, caution should be exercised if travelling alone.
