At the end of the city’s main boulevard, this garden square offers respite from the hustle and bustle of Cochabamba’s commercial district.

Surrounded by a mix of modern architecture and colonial buildings, Plaza Colón is indicative of the changes taking place in one of Bolivia’s booming cities. As a new generation of students and young professionals have begun to change the city, the garden square in the heart of the commercial district has remained largely unchanged, offering a chance to relax amid the busy streets. Admire Bolivia’s native plants as you stroll through the park, walk across a pedestrian bridge over the water feature at one end of the park or sit on a bench with a picnic.

Plaza Colón marks the end of El Prado, or Avenida José Ballivián, one of Cochabamba’s main boulevards. The tree-lined street is regularly the site of carnivals, fairs and celebrations. These festive events regularly spill into the plaza, making it a lively destination. During the week, however, use this spot as an ideal place to take a break from the shopping, restaurants and bars of the boulevard. Purchase ice cream from one of the surrounding restaurants and bring it to a park bench to enjoy.

Stroll along the pedestrian bridge that crosses the large pool at one end of the park. Look for a number of other water features, including ornate fountains, within the square. Palm trees provide large areas of shade throughout the park. Cochobamba’s Town Hall is on the eastern side of the park. Visit the Church of the Hospice along the southern edge.

Plaza Colón, named after explorer Christopher Columbus, is located in the heart of Cochabamba’s commercial district. Most people reach it by walking along El Prado. Its proximity to the city’s tourist office makes it an ideal resting place after picking up information about your stay in the city. Find parking along the street as well as taxis and minibuses ready to take you across the city. There is no fee to enter the square.
