The Sugar Wharf is an iconic structurein Port Douglas. Each sailboat that goes to the Great Barrier Reef passes thishistoric building. Once a working dock, today this pretty white structure is apopular place for weddings. It juts out from the shore, overlooks the DicksonInlet and is one of the most photographed places in town.
The Sugar Wharf was once used forshipping sugar around Australia. Trains to the sugar mill, located in Mossman, were connected to the wharf. When the first road to Cairns was built in 1958,boats ceased to be used to ship sugar. Now, with its whitewashed walls andstunning views of the inlet, the Sugar Wharf is one of the most loved locallandmarks.
Photograph the white shed as it standsout on the sea and reflects on the water. The natural backdrop is stunning withthe blue sky and the swaying palm trees. Thepylons along the wharf allow boats to moor, though these days theyare likely to be a wedding party rather than sailorsor fishermen.
Before the jetty was restored, the pierwas a great place to fish, relax, watch the sunset or learn about the maritimehistory of Port Douglas at the shipwreck museum. The closing of the museumincluded an upgrade of the structure into a functions venue with a bar, dance floorand dining tables. Book your special occasion here or relax on the wharf at anytime of day.
Just down from the Dickson Inlet and thewharf is the Marina Mirage. This is where all the excursions for the GreatBarrier Reef start and finish.
With the rolling mountains and the Coral Sea creating a scenic backdrop and St. Mary’s by the Sea chapel located nearby, the Sugar Wharf is abeautiful and convenient place to host your special event. For some of the bestphotography opportunities, head to the small beach at the south of Anzac Parkwhere you can capture the wharf surrounded by natural beauty.
