This lively Valencia Old Town square contains a mix of centuries-old architectural styles, outdoor dining and seasonal craft markets.

Plaza de la Reina is a charming square featuring some of the city’s most distinctive architecture, artisanal craft markets and a selection of cafés and restaurants with outdooor seating. The square lies in the centre of Valencia’s Old Town and is a great place to start a walking tour of the city.

Begin your discovery of Plaza de la Reina with a visit to Valencia Cathedral, the large building on the square’s north side. The cathedral was founded in the 13th century over a former Moorish mosque and features baroque, Gothic and Roman architecture. Hire an audio guide for a small fee and take yourself on a tour around the cathedral to find a sacred chalice that is believed to be the Holy Grail, the cup said to be used during the last supper. Make your way up the spiral staircase to reach the Miguelete bell tower to enjoy commanding views over the city centre.

Explore the streets around Plaza de la Reina to find cafés, bars and restaurants. Pick one with an outdoor terrace and take your seat.

Try a horchata drink, a local blend of water, sugar and tigernut (a type of root). You might find the best horchata in the city at Horchatería de Santa Catalina, on the square’s southern edge. Founded in the 1800s, the café is supposedly the oldest place in Valencia that serves this local specialty.

Coincide your visit to the square during one of the artisanal markets, held several times throughout the year. The Mercado de L’Escuraeta is held in May and features a selection of local traders selling pots, utensils and ceramics. The square’s tourist information office can provide further details about the different markets and events.

Plaza de la Reina is conveniently located in the centre of town. Visit nearby attractions, including the Central Market and Plaza de la Virgen. Park your car in the square’s parking lot for a fee or make use of the public bus route that stops here.
