The exhibitions in this innovative modern art gallery rotate every six months, and are accompanied by a carefully selected programme of events and activities.

The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts was established in order to generate enthusiasm for the arts in St. Louis, and to foster creativity among its inhabitants. This unusual gallery opens as standard on Saturdays and Wednesdays only, but schedules a range of talks, tours and concerts throughout the week. Pieces on display are not named and no descriptions are provided visitors are encouraged to reflect on the meaning themselves.

The legendary architect Tadao Ando designed the gallery building, which is a work of art in itself: a minimal masterpiece in glass and concrete. Within the gallery courtyard sits one of its few permanent pieces – "Joe", a rusty-red steel spiral, which you can enter and explore. As you come into the main gallery itself you'll notice Ellsworth Kelly's striking painting, Blue Black, on the southern wall.

The temporary exhibits are the main draw, however, and are always stimulating and inspiring. Check the gallery's official website for details about what's showing while you're in town previous exhibits have focused on themes like Art and the Spiritual, and Minimalism and Beyond.

It's also definitely worth checking out what events are on. Visit the website and sign up for a panel discussion or lecture on the current exhibition, or one of the monthly themed gallery tours. A firm favourite is the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra concert series. Concerts take place around once a month and make for a great cultural night out.

Entry to the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts is free of charge. The gallery is located on Washington Boulevard in St. Louis city centre, and is just a short walk from many of the city's hotels and other attractions. It is also well serviced by public transport, with Metro stations and bus stops nearby.
