Whether you’re looking for a game of cricket or tennis, or simply seeking some peace and quiet, you’ll love this park on the banks of Southampton’s River Itchen.

Riverside Park is an 80-acre (32-hectare) common with sport and serenity at its core. The park attracts those looking for a quiet, sunny afternoon by the River Itchen as well as sports fanatics keen to avail themselves of the soccer, cricket, golf, tennis and skating amenities. The park is a hub of activity, attracting families, dog walkers, fishing enthusiasts and sports teams year-round.

Spot an array of wildlife around the river, such as salmon, water voles, dragonflies, kingfishers and otters. If you have children, bring plenty of bread to feed the hungry ducks. Explore the parks many paths, then hike along the river on Bargeman’s Walk, a 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) circular trail that starts and ends at Woodmill, adjacent to Riverside Park. Take the kids to Woodmill’s play area then have lunch at one of the nearby pubs.

Sport is an essential part of the park. Bring your clubs to the 18-hole Pitch and Putt and practice your swing against a scenic backdrop of rolling green hills and the river. Cycle around the training track, or take part in a game of soccer on one of the six fields. Relax in front of a typically English cricket match, or zoom around the site’s skate park. In the summer, make sure to visit the charming miniature railway, which runs on Sunday afternoons. Look out for community events too, such as the rowing regatta and traveling carnivals.

Riverside Park is located 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) north of the center of Southampton, on the banks of the River Itchen. Take a train to nearby Swaythling Railway Station or Bitterne Station, or take a bus right to the park. Drivers will find parking lots on Manor Farm Road and Woodmill Lane.
