Sit on a café terrace and stroll along the cobbled lanes of this pleasant square, where a notorious execution took place.

Surrounded by upscale restaurants and boutiques, the charming Saint George Place is one of the main squares in the heart of Toulouse. Dating back to the Middle Ages, this vast and historic plaza is today known for its thriving wine market. Browse the covered stalls to try the range of brands and grape varieties on display.

Watch people go by from the terraces of the cafés, whose tables are placed out on the square. Sit at a bench on one of the patches of grass and let your kids play on the small climbing frame in the children’s play area.

The square is mostly pedestrianized and is surrounded by a cobbled lane for walkers and joggers. Note that small posts border the single narrow road that crosses the square. Browse the items for sale in the various shops that line the walkway and dine on traditional French cuisine in the restaurants.

Attend some of the events that take place year-round in this active piazza, where friends and sightseers gather. Learn the history of the square in which the famous 18th-century Calas Affair came to a conclusion. Protestant figure Jean Calas was executed here after being accused of murdering his son to prevent him from converting to Catholicism.

Stroll down the quaint, narrow alleys that branch off from the square and lead to some of the most intriguing attractions in Toulouse. Enter the adjacent Centre Commercial Espace Saint Georges shopping mall for its range of restaurants and stores. Purchase food, flowers and bottles of wine at the market, which opens Monday through Saturday.

Saint George Place is on the eastern side of the town center of Toulouse. Take the metro to the François-Verdier station and walk northwest for less than 10 minutes to reach the square. You can also drive and leave your car in one of the parking lots in the area. Nearby sights include the Museum of the Augustins, the David Léger Sculpture Workshop and Saint Etienne Cathedral.
