Part art installation, part spiritual shrine, this 100-metre-high architectural feat fuses magnificent wood carvings with an air of religious reverence.

The Sanctuary of Truth, also known as Wang Boran or Prasat Mai, was conceived by millionaire businessman, Lek Viryaphant. His dream was to combine the symbols and philosophies of a variety of Asian religions with the hope of creating a single shared ideology. The monument is literally wall-to-wall wood carvings, all hand-crafted in the Khmer architectural style. No surface is left undecorated as faces of gods and goddesses emerge from the teak surfaces of bannisters, ceilings and pillars. The building's four main spires are covered with sculpted figures, countless animal carvings and spiritual symbols representing Thai, Indian, Cambodian and Chinese religions. You could easily spend hours exploring the rooms and admiring the artwork. It may test your faith to hear that the entire monument is constructed without a single nail! The project has been on-going for the past 30 years and is not due to be completed until 2025. A visit to this beautiful building will allow you to see art in the making as more than 250 craftspeople work daily to adorn every square inch of the building with ornate iconography. Guided tours run every half hour throughout the day and take you on a journey through the four main halls, each one exploring the connections between man, earth and the universe. The building itself is an awesome sight to take in, but views of the ocean from within are equally stunning. Thai dance shows take place twice a day providing a pleasant change of pace from the reverent surroundings. An entry fee does apply and visitors are required to dress respectfully while on the grounds. The Sanctuary of Truth is situated north on Naklua Street, just North of Pattaya Beach.
